Awards

Joe Nall Week celebrates pilots and how aviators become friends united by a common language. Many individuals leave an indelible mark on their fellow pilots and are immortalized with awards in their honor during Joe Nall Week.

The Joe Nall Award

The Joe Nall Award is an annual award given during Joe Nall Week, commemorating the enduring legacy of Joseph T. Nall, who dedicated himself to the “Big Bird Fly-In” and the growth of Joe Nall Week until his passing in 1983.

The award celebrates individuals embodying Joe’s spirit during Joe Nall Week, recognizing those who emulate his generosity, warmth, and inclusive nature. Recipients exemplify Joe’s spirit, fostering friendships and contributing selflessly to Triple Tree Aerodrome and the broader hobbyist community. This honor is a tribute to Joe’s profound impact, perpetuating his ethos of hospitality and servant leadership service within the model aviation community.

The Bob Smith Award

The “Bob Smith” award is a rotating trophy/award that is awarded on the last Friday of the Joe Nall Week event. This is given to the pilot of an RC model that flies on the main flight line during the event.

The pilot flies his or her model in a scale-like flight presentation and demonstrates scale take-off and landing, as well as scale flight maneuvers and or aerobatics.
o The model is presented in a scale color scheme, and presented in a way that follows very closely the flight characteristic of its full-size counterpart.

The winner of this award is chosen by previous winners that are present at the event.
